Shimti Georgette Salwar Suit Material (Unstitched) – Pink

How to Choose Salwar Suit Fabric for Every Season

Every Indian household has a tailor story. The fabric is chosen with care, carried to the tailor’s shop, and a few days later it comes back as a suit that fits like nothing off a rack ever does. The secret to a suit you will wear for years starts with one decision: the right fabric for the season.

Summer (March to June): let the fabric breathe

In Delhi’s summer heat, only natural, breathable fabrics make sense. Pure cotton absorbs sweat, stays cool and softens with every wash. Choose light colours — white, lemon, powder blue, mint — and prints or light embroidery rather than heavy work. A cotton blend is a good middle path if you want fewer creases and quicker drying.

Monsoon (July to September): quick-dry and dark

Rainy days call for fabrics that dry fast and do not show splashes. Polycotton and cotton blends work well, and deeper shades — maroon, bottle green, navy — hide the occasional mud mark. Avoid very sheer fabrics that cling when damp.

Festive season (October to December): chanderi, satin and georgette

From Navratri to Diwali to the wedding season, this is when suits get dressed up. Chanderi, the handloom fabric from Madhya Pradesh, has a light sheen and feels festive without being heavy. Satin photographs beautifully, and georgette has the soft fall that anarkalis need. Pair them with a matching necklace and earring set and the look is complete.

Winter (December to February): warmth with grace

Wool and wool-blend suit materials keep you warm while still looking elegant. Rich colours — mustard, wine, mehandi green — suit the season. Ask your tailor for a slightly looser fit so you can layer a warm inner underneath.

Three questions customers ask us

How much fabric do I need? Every product page lists the top, bottom and dupatta lengths. A standard top needs about 2.5 metres; anarkalis need more.

Should I wash before stitching? Yes — especially cotton. One cold wash before cutting avoids shrinkage later.

Will the colour run? Wash dark colours separately the first two or three times, in cold water, and dry in shade.
