How to Give Measurements to Your Tailor for a Perfect Suit
The best part of unstitched dress material is that the suit is made for you alone. A few minutes with a measuring tape makes the difference between a suit you love and one that stays in the cupboard.
The eight measurements that matter
- Bust: around the fullest part, tape level all round.
- Waist: around the natural waist, the narrowest part.
- Hip: around the fullest part of the hips.
- Shoulder: from one shoulder edge to the other across the back.
- Kurta length: from the shoulder to where you want the hem.
- Sleeve length and armhole: from shoulder to the sleeve end, and around the arm joint.
- Bottom length: from waist to ankle.
- Bottom ankle opening: how narrow you want the salwar, churidar or pants at the ankle.
Details to decide before you go
Neckline (round, V, boat, sweetheart), sleeve style (full, three-quarter, cap), side slits and lining. Bring a suit that already fits you well — most tailors can copy its measurements exactly.
Which style for which fabric?
Cotton suits straight kurtas and A-lines; chanderi and georgette suit anarkalis and flared styles; satin suits structured, festive cuts. You will find fabric lengths on every product in our salwar suit collection and kurta churidar materials.
Tip: pre-wash cotton once before stitching, and ask for an extra inch of seam allowance so the suit can be let out later.
